Introduction and History

Charles University in Prague  participates in the Willem C. Vis Moot since 2009. From humble beginnings, organized mainly by enthusiastic students, the team has acquired support of the faculty members and coaches recruited from experienced litigators. Extensive support of the Vis Moot Team is also provided by generous sponsors.

The Vis Moot Competition consists of two phases, preparation of written memoranda and practice for oral presentations of arguments. The case is published at the beginning of October each year and the finals of the Moot take place in April. Each year, the case involves a complicated commercial dispute that is resolved in international arbitration proceedings. The material legal framwork is based on the Convention on Contracts on International Sale of Goods (CISG)  and the procedural issues pertain to a set of arbitration rules of a well-known Arbitration Court chosen each year for the particular case. Universities participating in the Vis Moot include the most prestigious law schools from all over the world and with around 300 teams participating in the finals the Vis Moot is one of the largest mooting competitions in the world.

The Team of the Charles University is selected from participants of a class „International Commercial Arbitration Moot“ led by the coaches, during which all students focus on preparation of the Memorandum for Claimant. Following its submission, the Team prepares for the Memorandum for Respondent and subsequently for oral pleadings. Participation is rewarded with ECTS points, priceless experience in Private International Law and with practical knowledge obtained during practice sessions in top tier law firms and in training rounds, so-called Pre-Moots. The Team attends mostly European Pre-Moots, with Germany, Poland, Hungary, France or UK being the favourite destinations of our Team Members.
